Exploring Amateur Radio Astronomy: From Hobby Projects to Citizen Science

Our speaker will be Joseph McLaughlin. Joseph is a club member who is very excited about sharing his enthusiasm for amateur radio astronomy with the rest of us. It sounds like he has tried some really fun, easily accessible, and inexpensive projects and he would love to help other members get started in radio astronomy too. Please see the description of his presentation below:

An introduction to radio-astronomy, and how we can use radio to better understand our universe. The author will discuss the basics of radio, how radio waves are used by astronomers to study pulsars, nebulae, and distant galaxies, and how you can create your own radio-telescope and start observing the radio-sky.

About Joseph McLaughlin

Joseph McLaughlin is an infrastructural engineer from Portland, Oregon. He is an avid amateur astronomer, ham radio enthusiast, a member of the Society of Amateur Radio-Astronomers (SARA), and a local RCA member. He has tested dozens of commercial antennas and built many of his own in order to better receive and study radio emissions from our Sun, from Jupiter and her moons, and even from the galactic plane of the Milky Way galaxy. He is also currently seeking other amateur astronomers who are interested in taking part in future radio-astronomy projects.
