A Scientist's Journey into Science Communication

Most of us do not read scientific journals. Instead, we depend on a small army of experts who translate scientific results and jargon into more accessible language and who help us understand the wider contexts where scientific results and breakthroughs fit. Monday's speaker, Dr Katherine Kornei is one of these valuable experts. Aside from fulfilling this important role, Dr Kornei was a member of the RCA board for several years. She is a good friend and we're happy to have her return and share stories and insights from her travels across the scientific landscape. Please see her description of her presentation below. It would be great to have you join us.

After finishing a Ph.D. in astronomy, Katherine Kornei decided she wanted to communicate science to more than the handful of people who read her 232-page dissertation. Katherine is now a freelance science writer who covers Earth and space science for outlets such as Science News, Eos, and The New York Times. This talk will focus on Katherine's journey into science communication and provide a peek into how science writers find, report, and produce the stories that end up making headlines.
